RANGELEY LAKES SNOWMOBILE CLUB

NEWSLETTER

December 2000

RLSC Newsletter Past Issues

Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving!

We have seen several "small" snowstorms already this year and there is some ice in the coves on the lake. Long ways to go before lake is frozen over though. I did see a snowmobiler riding in a snow covered field the other day!

Easy Bucks Winners at the November Membership meeting were Don Dumont and Lee Holman. Neither were present so they won $50 each. Congratulations!

There is no actual "business meeting" in December; the Christmas party will take place on December 16th at Peoples Choice Restaurant. Please call People's Choice (207-864-5220) and let them know if you plan to attend. We will draw two names for the Easy Bucks raffle, even though there is no actual meeting.

If you are planning on attending the Christmas party, please bring an unwrapped toy and/or a canned good, boxed food, etc. The club donates this to the food bank at the Episcopal Church here in Rangeley and the toys are given to the "Giving Tree" organization. They distribute the toys to children of needy families to help brighten their Christmas. Your donation means a lot.

Remember to get your 50/50 tickets returned before the 16"'. In the past, this has been a large jackpot. You can't win if you don't enter! Also, the Super Raffle tickets must be in by the 14". The drawing is on December 19th and we have to mail your tickets to the Maine Snowmobile Association after they are received by the club. Make sure you send them in if you want to be eligible to win one of the four snowmobiles.

Again this year, we are raffling off a "mini" snowmobile. This is a child's machine, and very nice!! Three tickets were enclosed with this newsletter. If you wish to sell or buy more, please write or e-mail the club and they will be sent to you. This machine is donated in part by Polaris Industries and Oquossoc Marine, the local Rangeley Polaris snowmobile dealer. The Club thanks both Polaris and Larry Koob, owner of Oquossoc Marine, for their generosity. The snowmobile will be on display at People's Choice in Rangeley.

An update on the Magalloway River Bridge Don't look for the bridge this year. The State has extended the time limits for our grant to build this bridge and it won't be finished for this season due to delays in engineering, delivery of materials, etc. When the drawings were finished, the materials were ordered and partially delivered, however, winter started setting in and there is no way this bridge can be built for this season. Something to look forward to for next year! The Rangeley to New Hampshire trail will be routed the same as it was last year.

The new bridge in Oquossoc, however, is ready for this year. This bridge was built by Rangeley Heritage Trust and Oquossoc Trails, Inc. and replaces the "swinging bridge" over the Rangeley River. A big improvement!

Remember to get your membership renewal forms in soon. After next month, if you have not renewed your membership for this year, you will no longer receive the newsletter.

The Snodeo Committee is hard at work organizing this annual event. We need help!! Enclosed with this newsletter is a sign up sheet where you can volunteer your time in different areas where we need help. Mail the form to the club address and someone from the Committee will get in touch with you. Snodeo will be held on January 18, 19, 20, 21st If you need to find lodging, etc. to attend this event,  click on "accommodations" and you will find local motels, restaurants, shops, etc. listed there. You can also get information by calling the Rangeley Lakes Chamber of Commerce at (207) 864-5571. Snodeo will have a couple of new events added to the agenda this year. One is a "demo-ride" which will be held in the field next to the Rangeley Inn. Hopefully, all snowmobile manufacturers will be participating in this. Another event is an ice sculpture contest being held with the local school. Hope to see you all there! Snodeo is a lot of fun!

We are expecting the new trail maps to arrive next week. If you have ordered a map, it will be mailed out to you as soon as we get them.

It is important that riders adhere to the law and stay off plowed roads and roads that are marked "no snowmobiling". Many roads in the Rangeley area are owned by paper companies who generously allow us to use their property for our trails. When they mark the roads "no snowmobiling"' it Is usually because they are working in the area. They own these roads and have the right to close them to snowmobiling. We don't want to jeopardize their permission to use their property for our trails and this could happen if we don't respect their wishes. If logging trucks are using the roads, it is very unsafe for a snowmobile to be on them. These trucks are out there to earn their living and don't have time to watch out for snowmobilers. Remember always, SAFETY FIRST!!!

Hope to see you in the area soon!

Until next month	Think Snow!!!!
