May 2002

Clark Allen, Vince Banaitis and Gail Gavigan traveled to Presque Isle on Saturday, April 20th to attend the annual MSA Directors meeting and banquet, and……….

WE DID IT AGAIN!!!  The Maine Snowmobile Association awarded the RLSC the trophy for the #1 Club in the State of Maine (largest membership).  Thanks to all of you for your support.  This is the fifth year in a row –  let’s work on keeping the trophy here in Rangeley next year too! Photo.

Another prestigious, unprecedented award was given at the meeting.  Scott Ramsay, Snowmobile Division, Bureau of Parks and Lands, Maine Dept. of Conservation, presented Clark Allen with an award for all he has done for the sport of snowmobiling.   In Scott’s words, “we have been thinking about doing this award for a while and finally when Clark took on the Magalloway Bridge Project, we decided to start what we hope will be an annual award for snowmobile trail volunteer of the year from the Dept. of Conservation – Snowmobile Program.  The project had been discussed for at least 10 years to replace the unsafe crossing of Parmachene Lake.  This was a huge project with logistical problems because of it’s distance from a public road (one hour – one way).  The  RLSC felt the project was too large for the club to take on but Clark simply looked at that as a challenge, so with the help of a grant from our bureau called the National Recreational Trail Grant, Clark went to work and donated about 800 hours over the life of the project, from preliminary paperwork to the final product.  With this in mind, we decided it was time to recognize this volunteer”.    Scott presented Clark a recognition  plaque which is a photo of the bridge and an impression that reads “Snowmobile Volunteer of the Year”, and also a L.L. Bean three-season forest green jacked with the same “Snowmobile Volunteer of the Year” embroidered on the chest and a Department volunteer’s pin.  Congratulations Clark!!!!!  We all know there is nobody more deserving!  Check out the photos.

Also, one of our members, Greg Silloway has once again won the first place award in the Maine Snowmobile Association’s annual photo contest.  Congratulations Gregg!  (Gregg received first place last year).  Keep up the good work and we hope you can make it number 3 next year!

All in all, the RLSC came home from the meeting with some great awards.

Easy Bucks winners at the April meeting were Paul Leblanc and Lewis Haley, both of Rangeley.  Neither were present and won $50 each.  Two more drawings this season – good luck to everyone who got in on this drawing.

Leslie Ferguson prepared the meal for our April meeting and it was a delicious ham dinner.  Thanks Leslie.  We sure do have some good cooks in Rangeley!

Mark Kelley, RLSC Club member, has donated four tickets to a NFL game at Foxboro Stadium in Massachusetts between the New England Patriots and  the Green Bay Packers.  This game is scheduled for Columbus Day weekend in October and they are prime aisle seats at the new stadium.  Raffle tickets will be enclosed with the June newsletter, please consider buying them – the funds generated from this raffle will be put in the RLSC Club House building fund.    We were hoping to send the tickets out with this newsletter, but we haven’t received them  from the printer yet.  The drawing will be held at the September membership meeting.

The May meeting will be held at the Rangeley Congregational Church on May 11th, with dinner at 6:30 PM and meeting to follow.  Nominations will be taken for Officers and Board of Directors at this meeting.    Election will be held at the June meeting.

The RLSC Board of Directors is meeting monthly throughout the summer to make plans for next season.  If you have any suggestions  for improvements in the way the club operates, please let us know.

Rangeley received about 8 inches of snow on April 28th!  That snow would certainly have been welcomed a couple months ago.  Only in Maine!!!

Keep an eye on the RLSC web page for news.  We will be updating with new membership forms, etc. very soon.

Hope to see you at the May and June meetings!

Until next month…………..

Gail Gavigan, Secretary
