RLSC Trail Conditions Final Report 2013 Season

April 1, 2013

Our final grooming runs will be Monday April 1st. We will try to groom any trails that have sufficient snow one last time.

Bosebuck Camps will close after dinner on Saturday March 30th for food service but they will be open for gas into April.

Please consider putting some money in one of our donation boxes. We have spent $40,000 just on groomer fuel so far and we plan to groom at least to Easter Weekend.

We are 100 % open but it is rough riding from Rangeley Lake into Rangeley or Oquossoc and rough riding on ITS 84 where it passes through Oquossoc.  There is still good cover elsewhere and very good cover once you get to higher elevations away from Rangeley or Oquossoc.  Best riding will be north of Route 4 and in the higher elevations on the south side of Rangeley Lake.

Trailer to gas and then park near trails with snow .

Lake riding is wet in the day time with slushy areas .  You need to use caution.

Connector Trail 117 was groomed last Friday and Saturday and the trail from Connector 117 at Coos Canyon to Weld was groomed Friday. It may be getting bare on south facing slopes

Backcountry riding is excellent. There are reports of up to 10 feet of snow near the border. Be aware that the border is heavily patrolled. Do not risk a fine or worse.

 - No lake is ever “Safe”! -

Please do not attempt to walk, ski or ride snowmobiles on the lakes unless you are absolutely sure that the ice conditions will support you and your equipment. Rangeley has plenty of trails on land for snowmobiling, skiing, snowshoeing and walking.

    Current Trail Conditions

***PLEASE RIDE RESPONSIBLY***

Important Messages

Please do not ride on plowed roads that are not posted to allow snowmobiles.

If you are not comfortable riding on the lakes, please stay off the lakes and ice. If you do not know the lakes, please use the trails. The RLSC has no trails on any body of water.

Be aware that there will be no public parking in the Rangeley Town Park this winter.  The parking area has been relocated on the trail next to Rangeley Inn. There are signs on Route 4. There is direct trail access from this new parking area.

Trail Conditions

Expect spring conditions through the first week of April. We still have lots of snow here with very good trail cover in the higher elevations. Snow cover should stay good for several more days

The loop trail around Parmachenee Lake is open.

 Trail ratings

Closed: Stay off at landowner request.

Poor = tough sledding but passable

Fair = Thin cover with exposed rocks, gravel and dirt

Good = generally good snow cover on primarily a snow/ice base with a few thin spots

Excellent = consistently good snow cover on a deep base (it does happen!)

Please do not ride on the plowed roads near ITS 84 on the south side of Rangeley Lake. There is extensive logging there and we are getting many complaints from the loggers and landowner.

This is the final trail report. It was a great season. Trails are open until they are too bare to ride or they are posted by the landowners. Backcountry riding could still be good for a couple weeks or so depending on temperatures.
