Rangeley Lakes Snowmobile Club welcomes you to participate
in Take a Friend Snowmobiling Week
Take a Friend Snowmobiling kicks off during school
vacation week. This campaign was developed by the
International Snowmobile Manufactures Association (ISMA) to encourage all
snowmobilers to take their non-snowmobiling friends out snowmobiling. This is a
National event and it is Statewide for February School Vacation.
The Rangeley Lakes
Snowmobile Club (RLSC) will support this program by offering a two-day special
event here in Rangeley. First, the RLSC along with the Maine Department of
Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIF&W) is offering a Snowmobile Safety
Course. It will occur Wednesday February
18th at the Rangeley Region Guide’s and Sportsmen's club house on
Old Skiway Drive, Oquossoc from 9:00am to 3:00pm. This thorough course covers: an
introduction to the sport, rules of the road, snowmobile trail sign
identification, snowmobile components and safety features, cold weather
clothing, safety tips, first aid, map and compass, survival kit, driving
positions and driving approaches to snow conditions and terrain, maintenance
and repair, and preseason checks and summer storage. It will also address troubleshooting issues
you may face with a snowmobile. Snowmobiles provided by MDIF&W will be
available for the outdoor part of the course where a participant will have lots
of field practice to learn how to handle a snowmobile as well as how to change
the spark plugs and the drive belt. Participants are welcome to bring their own
snowmobile as long as it is registered and in running condition.
The Take a Friend
Snowmobiling event will occur on Thursday February 19. Participants will be guided on a trip west on
Interconnected Trail System (ITS) 84 to view one of the most scenic trails in
Western Maine. Trip distance and the
possibility for a trail side cookout will be determined once the weather is
known. Registered Maine Guide Caroleen “Mac” Dudley will guide the trip out of
Oquossoc beginning at the Oquossoc Marine Parking lot at 9:00am. Experienced
riders are encouraged to invite some one along who may not be a snowmobiler.
Helpers will be available for the ride so that non-snowmobilers can rent a sled
and gear and enjoy a guided ride. Absolute beginners should attend the
Snowmobile Safety Course prior to the ride but this is not a requirement. The ride will be an all day event.
This two-day event is for the young and old,
non-snowmobilers and experienced snowmobilers. Pre registration is required for
either or both events. Call Mac Dudley @ 207-864-5919 for details and to make a
reservation no later than February 15th. As a special incentive to participate in this
event, ISMA will give away a new snowmobile to a lucky individual who
participates in the Take a Friend Snowmobiling Week. Non-snowmobilers and their
snowmobiling friends as well as RLSC club members who participate in the ride
get to register to win as well. Registration information will be provided on
the days of the events. Come on out and enjoy the fun snowmobiling has to
offer, learn how to be safe doing so and take a chance on winning a new
snowmobile in the process.
